Fond Memories of Hop Picking with Pauline Davies

In this short clip Leominster Councillor - Pauline Davies - talks about her experiences hop picking as a child. Pauline was just 4 years old when she first went picking with her mother. Children of all ages were taken out of school to go picking with their family - sometimes leaving for the farms as early as 4 o'clock in the morning!

Pauline recalls hop picking with fondness and describes how it was a social experience - she paints a lovely picture of community spirit amongst the workers. The reality of hop picking as hard work is revealed too but it was well worth the pay, Pauline says, as at the tender age of 9 she manages to buy something quite extraordinary for her family with her earnings...
