“The Day The Bomb Dropped”

The Second World War in Hereford

Catcher Media wanted to share this short film extract from a longer film they made a while back about Hereford Cathedral Close. It contains many, many interviews with lively characters and local Herefordshire people. This 10-min extract is one of the more poignant sections as it concerns everyday people’s experiences of World War Two, as they were all children or young people at the time. The last part concerns VE day in Hereford.

Nancy Evans, original Canary Girl

Nancy Evans, resident of Hereford, agreed to share some of her experiences of wartime factory work in the 1940s. She was one of the women who worked in the munitions factories in Rotherwas, on the outskirts of Hereford. These women were often called “the canary girls” as their skin would turn a shade of yellow due to the chemicals involved in their wartime work. The munition factory was used in both world wars.

We hope you enjoy Nancy’s company and find her stories as engaging as we did.

Catcher Media were originally commissioned to conduct these interviews with Nancy by Herefordshire Council, and it was for a multi-media educational project linked to the Rotherwas ROF project at Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre. Interviews, archive photographs, audio and interpretation was accessible on a large touch-screen television.

NB: The whole interview is 19.30 mins and contains all the the other clips presented below.
