“Herefordshire Life Through A Lens was a project that, as a lover of photography and Herefordian, was a pleasure to work on.
Working on the project as a graphic designer I was responsible for creating a visual identity which would visually connect all the different aspects of the project. The typeface Helvetica was used for its legibility at different sizes and its neutrality, as the photos were always the stars of each publication. In the first phase blacks and yellows were used to create contrast and to help the imagery stand out. Later, phase two elements of the project were highlighted with magenta to attract attention in outdoor settings. As Derek Evans had produced so many wonderful photographs another focus of the design process was to capture the quality and range of the images, and this was achieved by using grids and montages.
As a life-long Herefordian many of the images had particular interest for me including images of the old cattle market, ‘the piggies’ and the River Wye beach by the Victoria bridge, which was a place of play throughout my childhood. The Fownhope images were of interest too as my great-grandmother was brought up there as one of eleven children, five of whom died (which apparently was common in the 1880’s). Throughout the 1980s I had also worked seasonally on the hops so all the wonderful images of the hop-picking years were a pleasure to design.
I would like to thank Rick and Julia at Catcher Media for giving me the opportunity to work on this project and of course Derek Evans for recording all those great moments of Herefordshire life.”
Innes Jones
Big thanks to Innes, he’s been with Catcher since the beginning, back in the days when we were a ramshackle collective of artists, and has always created amazing work.
