Nancy Evans, WW2 Munitions Worker in Hereford

Categories: Derek Evans Studio

Wnated to tell everyone about another ‘new’ page on the HLTAL website. This one features a video interview with Nancy Evans, resident of Hereford, who agreed to share her experiences of wartime work in the 1940s. She was one of the women who worked in the munitions factories in Rotherwas, on the outskirts of Hereford. These women were often called “the canary girls” as their skin would turn a shade of yellow due to the chemicals involved in their wartime work. The munition factories at Rotherwas were in use in both world wars.

Catcher Media were commissioned to conduct these interviews with Nancy (some years ago) by Herefordshire Council, but we thought visitors to the site would appreciate a chance to watch them HERE. The interview was included in a multi-media educational project linked to the Rotherwas ROF activities at Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre. Interviews, archive photographs, audio and interpretation was accessible on a large touch-screen television.
