Tears and triumphs of the sports day

Categories: Uncategorised

Who doesn’t remember the sack, egg and spoon, three-legged, wheelbarrow or the zig-zag race? And then finally the running races, school sports day of lore. Haphazard white lane lines painted on the uneven grass surface and regulation black daps, the closest most of us came to trainers. A sporting uniform of hand-me-down shorts and t-shirts, and always the threat of having do take part in your vest and underpants if you forgot your kit. Nonetheless, a thrilling day, full of excitement, tears, disappointment, and exhaustion. Like the school Christmas party, sports day was one of the highlights in the calendar. Afterwards, names were written on sporting certificates with the greatest of care, in swirling calligraphy, capturing the moment for ever, only to be found decades later at the back of some drawer. In the closing days of the summer term bringing in a favourite board game from home to play instead of doing maths, really was the signal for the long summer holiday, which was about to begin. As usual Derek Evans captured that timeless quality in all our children, before life gets too serious.
