“Wonderfully ambitious and beautifully realised too” says Daniel Meadows about the HLTAL project.
The first Derek Evans Memorial Symposium was held on Thursday 20th February 2020. People braved the flooding and adverse weather conditions to attend two lectures and a Q&A, hosted by Hereford College of Arts at its College road campus.
The first lecture was given by Alex Thimm, photographer and Course Leader from HCA, and fascinatingly it examined Derek Evans work in context with some of his contemporaries and better-known figures like Bill Brandt and Robert Doisneau. The second lecture was by famed ‘documentarist’ Daniel Meadows whose archive had been recently accepted by The Bodleian Library in Oxford. He gave an engaging and sometimes poignant into his life’s work, which he says has been: “a lifetime recording British society, challenging the status quo by working in a collaborative way to capture extraordinary aspects of ordinary life, principally through photography but also with audio recordings and short movies.”
