The iconic Hereford Bull

Categories: Uncategorised

White-faced and gorgeous russet coat, the Hereford Bull is as iconic as the apple or the hop in Herefordshire. In 2012, the erection of a life-sized statue of a Hereford Bull was considered timely by many fans of the breed. And there couldn’t have been a better location than the city centre, and within a stone’s throw of the Hereford Cattle Society. This little gem of an organisation was founded in 1878 under the Patronage of Queen Victoria, and they work to ensure the quality of the breed continues. Because Herefords are said to produce the best high marbled beef and are therefore in huge demand. According some estimates, Hereford Cattle has been exported to over 120 countries. Whether you’re in South America, Southern Africa, or Russia, the familiar sight of a Hereford is a comforting reminder of home.

They of course provided pitch-perfect shots for Derek. Hereford being the thumping heart of the Hereford Breed, provided many opportunities him. The annual Hereford’s sales at the city’s livestock markets led to a steady stream of images capturing the majesty and magnificence of the breed. These sales attracted buyers from all over the world too, bringing something of the exotic to quiet, sleepy Hereford.

And in 1951, actress Patricia Dainton visited Hereford to promote her film, ‘Dancing Years.’ How or why Patricia came to have her photo taken with a Hereford Bull, we will never know. Nonetheless, it makes for an eye-catching shot – for her, and for Derek.
